Hidden in the wooded hills of Hibernia—named from the Latin word for Ireland—St. Patrick’s Cemetery stands as one of the last remaining traces of a once-thriving Irish-American mining community in Morris County. Established in 1869, it served the families of St. Patrick’s Parish and the Irish laborers who built their lives—and this region—in the 19th century.
When the mines closed in the early 1900s and the parish dissolved, the cemetery was left without caretakers. Over time, it fell into neglect—headstones lost, grounds overgrown, and the stories of those buried there at risk of being forgotten.
The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of Morris County formally adopted this sacred site to ensure it would not be lost to time.
This is more than a cemetery—it is the final resting place of Irish immigrants who endured hardship, built community, and shaped Morris County. Many have no remaining descendants to preserve their memory. Without intervention, their legacy would disappear.
Through ongoing stewardship, we are working to:
Located within the Wildcat Ridge Wildlife Management Area, the cemetery remains accessible only by foot—a quiet but powerful reminder of the past.
Our mission is simple: to remember, to restore, and to ensure these voices are never lost.
