It is with great pride that the trustees of the St. Patrick's Day Parade of Morris County, New Jersey have selected their Grand Marshal. The honor goes to Father Patrick "Paddy" O'Donovan, Pastor of Notre Dame of Mount Carmel Church in Cedar Knolls. Everyone please congratulate Father Paddy and wish him well for his big day leading New Jersey's best St. Patrick's Day Parade! The parade will be held in Morristown on March 9th 2019, stepping off at noon.
“Father Paddy,” as he is known, was born in Bruff, County Limerick, Ireland. He studied at Saint Patrick National School and Saint Muchins College, Limerick, before completing his studies for the priesthood at Saint Patrick College, Carlow. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 10, 1972 in the Cathedral of the Assumption in Carlow, and celebrated his first Mass of Thanksgiving the following day in his home parish, SS. Peter and Paul in Bruff.
He dreamed of one day serving as a priest in the US since his father was employed here for a time. Recognizing these blessings, “I decided it was time to give back to the good people in the US through priestly service,” said Father Paddy.
Father Paddy’s first assignment in the United States was at Saint Joseph Parish, Newton, serving as parochial vicar as well as teaching theology part-time at Pope John XXIII High School. In 1977 he was appointed parochial vicar of Saint Patrick, Chatham, where he was moderator of the youth ministry program.
Father Paddy received his Master’s Degree in Education from Fordham University in 1979. He left Saint Patrick’s in 1991 when he was appointed to serve as Campus Minister at Drew University in Madison and the Madison-Florham Park campus of Fairleigh Dickinson University. In July of 1996-2015 Father Paddy was pastor of the Church of Christ the King, New Vernon before becoming pastor of Notre Dame of Mt. Carmel Parish in Cedar Knolls.
Father Paddy serves as chaplain for the New Jersey Professional Golf Association and has given back to numerous causes including our Catholic Charities organizations, Kindred Hospice, the Visiting Nurse Association, and has advocated for the poor, marginalized and forgotten.
